What is Return to Play?

Return to play is exactly what it sounds like. It's the process of rehabilitating a specific injury until you're fit enough to participate in your sport again. Think structured rest, isolated exercises, pain management, and gradually reloading the injured area. It answers one question: can this athlete compete again?

This approach is essential, but it has a ceiling. It treats the injury — not the athlete.

What is Return to Performance?

Return to performance takes a wider lens. Rather than focusing solely on the injured structure, we look at you as a complete athlete. Why did this injury happen in the first place? Was it a movement pattern, a muscle imbalance, fatigue, workload, or technique? And critically — what needs to change so it doesn't happen again?

This is where real, lasting progress is made. Return to performance asks: is this athlete moving, performing, and loading better than before the injury?

Why Does It Matter?

Research consistently shows that one of the biggest risk factors for a sports injury is a previous injury. Simply returning to play without addressing the root cause leaves you vulnerable to the same problem — or a compensatory injury somewhere else in the body.
