Lower Back Pain: How Can Physiotherapy Help?

Lower back pain is the most common musculoskeletal condition people will face and one of the most common reasons people seek out help. But with so many therapy options people can get confused who is the best to see. So let’s chat about exactly how Physio at Elite Performance Physio can help you.

The first step is always identifying what’s actually driving the pain. Is it:

  • A joint issue? - these are called facets.

  • Discogenic? - this doesn’t have to be as fearful as people expect.

  • Muscle overload?

  • Poor load management?

  • Or a combination of factors?

Not all back pain is from a specific structure, and most of it is very manageable with the right approach.

As sports physiotherapists, we:

  • Our verbal and hands on assessment is all about working out what is actually causing the pain

  • Identify whether tissues are damaged, irritated/inflamed or just overloaded

  • Treatment can include hands on to minimise pain, including massage, dry needling, mobilisations or cupping.

  • Prescribe exercises that address the underlying cause, not just symptoms. If symptoms aren’t too bad this might simply become your warm up before you train. If you’re quite debilitated it could be a home program 3times per day to help mobility.

  • Provide education to reduce fear around movement and lifting. This is often the most crucial step and not done appropriately by junior or less skilled staff. Fear can be a huge pain driver and education can help ease this.

A big part of recovery is understanding that backs are strong and adaptable. Clear guidance and the right exercises go a long way in getting you back to training with confidence.
