BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION (BFR)
You don't need to lift heavy to get stronger — and the research now proves it.
Blood flow restriction (BFR) training uses a cuff or wrap on your arm or leg to partially limit blood flow out of the muscle while you exercise. This tricks your muscles into working as hard as they would under heavy loads — but at just 20–30% of normal training weight. That means significant gains with far less stress on your joints.
Two recent high-quality meta-analyses — the gold standard of evidence — confirm this works. One, published in the Journal of Musculoskeletal Surgery and Research (2026), pooled 11 randomised controlled trials and found BFR produced large improvements in both muscle strength and size after orthopaedic surgery compared to standard rehab. A 2025 meta-analysis of ACL reconstruction patients found BFR improved quadriceps size, isokinetic strength, and mid-term knee function — all at loads that are safe in the early stages of recovery.
BFR is particularly useful for:
Post-surgical rehab (ACL, knee replacements, hip replacements)
Tendinopathy - patella and achilles
People with osteoarthritis or chronic joint pain who can't tolerate heavy loading
Athletes needing to maintain muscle during an injury
Older adults looking to rebuild strength without joint strain
Anyone in the early stages of a rehab program
It's safe, evidence-backed, and most people are surprised by how effective it feels at such low loads.
